Abnormal Pap Smears

Abnormal pap smears can be a scary moment in a woman’s life. In the majority of cases, it does not mean that you have cancer.  Pap smears are one of the most successful screening tools designed to identify a cervical abnormality before it becomes cervical cancer.  Australia has one of the most successful screening programs in the world and this is reflected by also having one of the lowest incidences of cervical cancer.  All women who have ever been sexually active are currently encouraged to have pap smears every 2 years.

Abnormal pap smears require further investigation in the form of colposcopy assessment and, if required, a cervical biopsy.   This is carried out by a gynaecologist with colposcopic experience.

With your comfort in mind, Sunnybank Centre for Women has both the staff and facilities required to further investigate and manage abnormal Pap smear results.
