PREGNANCY

Pregnancy is divided by us into 3 trimesters. 1st trimester is typically 0-12 weeks, 2nd 13-24 and third 25- 40 weeks. We go by weeks not months in this business. You will probably classify it as early pregnancy or ‘how exciting to be pregnant stage’, or it will be ‘when I stop feeling sick stage’. The next stage will be classified by you as ‘the nothing fits me but I don’t necessarily look pregnant phase.’ The last stage is ‘the everything aches and I feel like an elephant stage.’  If you’re feeling like this try and look at all the positives out of it; a chance to buy new clothes. A good excuse not to hold your gut in anymore. The miracle of a new life growing and kicking and representing a new change for your life.  You will have good days and bad days, but hopefully more good days where you will feel well, happy and looking forward to a new beginning. It can be scary- try push those fears aside or work through one at a time. Talk to friends who have had a baby, or look at mothers groups on line. There will be someone else out there going through exactly the same thing as you. Your doctors and midwife at Sunnybank Centre for Women are here to guide you and answer any questions you may have.

Most of us have heard of postnatal depression but there is also antenatal depression. If you are experiencing strong emotional mood swings, feeling sad most of the time and struggling with the thought of having a baby, talk to your GP or doctor. There might just be a solution for you. It’s also better to deal with it before the baby comes
